 Sissel Tolaas (*1959) is an artist based in Berlin. She studied mathematics, chemistry and visual arts in Bergen, Warschau, Poszan, St. Petersburg and Oslo. She has concentrated on the issue of smell, language and communication since 1990. With this she captures and bottles the essence of cities and creates literally perfume cities. She lectures at various international universities.
An installation of urban perfume creations by fragrance artist Sissel Tolaas shows how she worked with the scents of the Berlin districts of Reinickendorf, Mitte, Neukölln and Charlottenburg. She concentrates on her sense of smell, and distils individual elements, observations of residents to find the specific and essential scent of the district, then makes this scent into a perfume. She created a perfume for the Zollverein colliery exclusively for Talking Cities. “Essence” will be available from the exhibition company Zeche Zollverein in a limited quantity of 200 bottles.
